Texans know they need to shore up defense

HOUSTON (AP) Despite the biggest comeback in franchise history, the Houston Texans know they have room for improvement.

The Texans scored 24 consecutive points in the second half to top the San Diego Chargers 31-28 on Randy Bullock's 41-yard field goal as time expired on Monday night.

The Texans got off to a slow start. On the first play from scrimmage, Matt Schaub threw an interception. On the next play, the Chargers' Philip Rivers threw the first of his four touchdown passes and the Texans were down 7-0.

``It's such a negative play to start your football season,'' coach Gary Kubiak said. ``You start the game on a turnover, that's as bad as it can get. We dug ourselves such a big hole as a football team but they battled at the end.''

That early turnover was part of a slow start with an offense that generated just seven points on their first six drives.

``At halftime, as poorly as we'd played, there was still confidence,'' Kubiak said. ``There's a belief there that regardless of what happens on any given Sunday we can find a way to win a football game.''

Houston rallied in the second half. After Rivers' third-quarter touchdown pass, the defense shut down the Chargers and Schaub and offense got going.

Going into Sunday's home opener against the Tennessee Titans, the Texans know they need to avoid another slow start.

Having Ed Reed in the lineup would be a big help.

``We got so close last week it'd be so easy to say we're ready to go, it's a go. I think we're very close. I think we're very close,'' Kubiak said.

``Expect him to practice tomorrow. Does he take more of a load than he did last week? We'll see. I know we're very, very close. He's still a day-to-day thing.''

The Texans took positives out of the way they came back on the road and got the win.

``You don't get something like that done unless there's a total turn around. It was across the board,'' Kubiak said. ``Just proud of how we hung in there. It's not something you want to get really, really good at, but proud we hung in there and found a way to win.''

Notes: Offensive lineman David Quessenberry will be placed on injured reserve with a foot injury. ... Defensive lineman Antonio Smith will be at practice starting Wednesday after finishing his suspension. ... Linebacker Daryl Sharpton will return to practice after being inactive Monday with a concussion.
