HOUSTON (AP) Houston coach Gary Kubiak wasn't ready to say Friday who will back up quarterback Matt Schaub after T.J. Yates and Case Keenum both performed well this preseason.

Kubiak expects to make a decision on the spot by Thursday, which means he'll probably keep both quarterbacks on the roster.

The Texans have to trim their roster to 53 by Saturday afternoon.

Yates has been Schaub's backup for the last two seasons and led Houston to the first playoff win in franchise history when Schaub was injured in 2011. Keenum finished his college career at the University of Houston as the NCAA's career leader in total yards passing with 19,217 and passing touchdowns with 155. Despite those eye-popping numbers, he went undrafted, joined the Texans as a free agent and was eventually signed to the practice squad.

Kubiak loves the competition between the two.

``I want to keep them competitive all year long, regardless of which way I go,'' Kubiak said. ``Because, boy has it both made them better and made our team better. Statistically they have both been incredible.''

Keenum threw for 128 yards and a score in the first half and Yates added 109 yards with another score in Thursday's 24-6 win over Dallas.

Both quarterbacks moved the offense well in their time on the field this preseason and they also did a good job of taking care of the ball with neither throwing an interception.

``They protected the ball throughout camp,'' Kubiak said. ``We go against a dang good group every day and our guys have protected the ball pretty good and that's a key to our success. Hopefully, we continue to do that.''

Kubiak has enjoyed watching the way Keenum and Yates have gone about their business while vying for the job. He said they both have showed class and character throughout the process.

``They're very close and they study together and they complement each other, their work habits,'' Kubiak said. ``The room in general is just excellent and I think that's what has lent to the competition being so good and the result being so good because they are on the same page ... these two guys have obviously taken a big step in their careers. They've both gotten better.''

Along with the quarterback situation, Kubiak is also keeping an eye on the health of a pair of his young receivers. First-round pick DeAndre Hopkins missed his second preseason game on Thursday after sustaining a concussion against the Dolphins on Aug. 17.

Kubiak said he still hasn't passed the last stage of the concussion protocol, but that he expects him to be cleared this weekend and be back on the field on Monday.

DeVier Posey, who is entering his second season, played for the first time on Thursday since tearing an Achilles tendon in last year's season-ending playoff loss to New England. He played 14 snaps and had two receptions. The Texans had a light workout on Friday and Kubiak said Posey appeared to have come out of the game with no problems. He expects him to play in a limited capacity when Houston opens the season at San Diego on Sept. 9.
