GOLF

ATLANTA (AP) Playing with only 13 clubs in the bag after his 4-wood broke on the practice range, Henrik Stenson made three birdies on the opening four holes at East Lake to quickly seize control and shot 4-under 66 to build a four-shot lead over Adam Scott in the Tour Championship.

Stenson was at 10-under 130 going into the third round and might be playing a course far less firm. The forecast is for rain most of the day, and the starting times for the third round were moved up.

Scott finished with a 69 that put him at 134.

Tiger Woods was headed toward the best round of the day, 5-under through 13 holes, when he made double bogey on the 14th, had a triple bogey on the 17th and wound up with a 71. He was 14 shots behind. It was the first time since the 2011 PGA Championship that Woods began a tournament with back-to-back rounds over par.

KAPOLEI, Hawaii (AP) - Mark Wiebe had six birdies over a seven-hole stretch and shot an 8-under 64 to take a two-shot lead after the first round of the Pacific Links Hawaii Championship.

Mark Calcavecchia and John Cook each had a 66 for a share of second place, while Brian Henninger sits alone in fourth after a 67 in windy conditions at Kapolei Golf Links.

Vijay Singh, a three-time major champion on the PGA Tour and a former world No. 1, is among a group tied for eighth after finishing with a 69 in his first appearance on the Champions Tour.

TURIN, Italy (AP) - Francesco Molinari shot a 5-under 67 for a share of the lead after the second round of the Italian Open. Molinari tied Felipe Aguilar of Chile and Simon Thornton of Ireland at 9-under 135 at the Golf Club Torino.

Molinari's Ryder Cup teammate Nicolas Colsaerts lost his overnight lead when he bogeyed the 16th and 18th holes. He was one stroke back.

BASEBALL

NEW YORK (AP) - Alex Rodriguez has hit his 24th career grand slam, breaking a tie with Yankees Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig for most in major league history.

New York's designated hitter connected off Giants reliever George Kontos with two outs in the seventh inning Friday night, sending a tiebreaking drive the opposite way to right-center to lead the Yankees to a 5-1 win.

It was A-Rod's 14th slam with the Yankees, snapping a tie with Joe DiMaggio for second place on the team's list. The long ball was the 654th of Rodriguez's career, putting him six behind Willie Mays for fourth all-time.

NEW YORK (AP) - Andy Pettitte had no interest in a farewell tour or some big pronouncement regarding his (second) retirement.

Still, the New York Yankees' pitcher was having a hard time telling people he wasn't sure if he would be back next season when he already knew this was it. And he wanted to thank fans for all their support, something he wished he had a chance to do the first time.

So after discussing it with several close friends - including Mariano Rivera over lunch in Toronto - Pettitte chose to formally announce his decision at a Yankee Stadium news conference.

In a statement released hours before the Yankees began their final homestand, the 41-year-old Pettitte said he has reached the point where he knows he has left everything he has on the field. The left-hander initially retired after the 2010 season, but sat out only one year before returning to the Yankees.

AMERICA'S CUP

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Skipper Jimmy Spithill and Oracle Team USA stayed alive in the America's Cup for the second straight day, pulling away from Dean Barker and Emirates Team New Zealand to win the re-sail of Race 13 by 1 minute, 24 seconds.

Oracle's victory came an hour after the lightest wind of the regatta thwarted the Kiwis' chances to win the oldest trophy in international sports.

The first attempt at Race 13 was abandoned because of a time limit with the Kiwis far ahead of Oracle Team USA in light, shifty wind on foggy San Francisco Bay.

Emirates Team New Zealand leads 8-3. Oracle has won five races but was penalized two points by an international jury in the biggest cheating scandal in the Cup's 162-year history.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Houston Texans running back Arian Foster says in an upcoming documentary he accepted money his senior year at Tennessee.

Sports Illustrated first reported Foster's comments in the documentary, ``Schooled: The Price of College Sports.''

Foster, who played for the Volunteers from 2005-08, expanded on his comments after the Texans' practice.

Andrew Muscato, a producer of the documentary, said Foster didn't specify how much money he received or who paid him during the four-hour interview in February.

PRO FOOTBALL

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - San Francisco 49ers All-Pro linebacker Aldon Smith was released from jail after his pickup truck apparently struck a tree and he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and marijuana possession.

Smith later took to the practice field with his teammates at team headquarters in Santa Clara, and is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 4.

Head coach Jim Harbaugh expects Smith will play Sunday when the 49ers host Indianapolis.

PRO BASKETBALL

ROSEMONT, Ill. (AP) - Chicago Sky forward Elena Delle Donne got all 39 first-place votes to easily win the WNBA's rookie of the year award.

The second overall draft pick and part of a heralded class of first-year players, Delle Donne was presented with the trophy by WNBA president Laurel J. Richie before the Sky's playoff opener against the Indiana Fever.

Delle Donne averaged 18.1 points, 5.6 rebounds and shot 93 percent from the free throw line to help Chicago make the playoffs for the first time in franchise history. The Sky earned the top seed in the Eastern Conference.
