Texas A&M University has its first openly gay athlete.

Swimmer Amini Fonua, who is the 2012 Big 12 Champion in the 100 meter breast stroke and swam for Tonga in the 2012 Summer Olympics, told the Texas A&M paper The Battalion that he is gay.

Fonua cited the Aggie honor code as a factor in deciding to reveal his sexual orientation.

“An Aggie does not lie, cheat or steal. And if you’re living in the closet you’re living a lie,” Fonua told The Battalion.

Fonua is a telecommunications and media studies major at Texas A&M.
