Kellen Sampson, the son of new Houston Cougars basketball coach Kelvin Sampson, is joining the coaching staff.

This will be the first time Kellen has worked for his father as a full-time assistant.

Kellen, 28, spent three years at Appalachian State from 2011-14. He began his full-time coaching career at Stephen F. Austin in 2010-11.

“Kellen is extremely organized and extremely disciplined. He has a great way about him with the players and builds relationships. The city and University community, players, coaches and staff will enjoy him because of his personality. He has a bright future in this business,” Kelvin Sampson said in a release from the school. “My dad was my high school coach, and he was always the guy I looked up to. One of my great memories of coaching Oklahoma was coaching Kellen, and this is an opportunity to reunite. The father-son issue is there, but I could not have hired a better up-and-coming young coach than Kellen.”

Kellen worked under his father as a graduate assistant at Indiana in 2007-08. He played at Oklahoma from 2004 to 2007.
