Two Houston area college basketball players earned Conference USA honors for their play last week.
Rice University men’s basketball point guard Max Guercy was named C-USA Freshman of the Week for the second time in January -- his first honor coming on Jan. 7 -- while Houston women's basketball forward Marche' Amerson earned her first career C-USA Freshman of the Week honor.
Guercy averaged 10.5 points, 6.0 assists, 2.0 rebounds and 1.5 steals on the in the team's two games last week as he continues to lead the Owls in league play. He shot 7-of-19 from the field with, including three three-pointers. His 9.2 points per game rank third on the team, and with 18 assists in his last three games, he now has 46 on the season, which leads the team. Guercy ranks among the league leaders with his 43.3 three-point accuracy and his 79.2 percent mark from the foul line.
Amerson, a Bryan, TX native, averaged 13.0 points and 7.0 rebounds, including her first double-double in Houston's 81-70 win over Southern Miss last Thursday. She shot 43 percent (9-of-21) from the field and 7-of-8 from the free throw line. Amerson is averaging 11.2 points and 5.0 rebounds in conference play and leads all freshmen on the Houston squad with seven double-figure games.
The Rice men open a two-game homestand on Wednesday evening against cross-town rival Houston at 7 p.m.
The Houston women will look to remain near the top of the C-USA standings this week when they travel to face league-leading SMU at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
