Rice junior right-hander Austin Kubitza has earned Conference USA co-pitcher of the week, sharing the honor with Tulane’s Tony Rizzotti.
The Colleyville, Tex., native led the Owls to a 5-1 win over visiting No. 4 Stanford in their season opener last Friday. He posted a career-high 12 strikeouts in just 6.0 innings of work. Kubitza did not allow any runs in the outing, scattering just four singles and held Stanford to a composite .182 batting average.
Kubitza was picked by the C-USA coaches as the league’s preseason pitcher of the year.
After their series win over nationally ranked Stanford, the Owls moved up five spots to No. 13 in the Baseball America poll released Monday.
Rice will travel to Honolulu this weekend for a four-game series against Hawaii.
