Rice sophomore guard Julian DeBose has been granted his release from his scholarship and will look to transfer.
"I have asked for my release to pursue options of transferring so I can be closer to my family," DeBose said in a statement released by the university.
Debose is from Washington, D.C.
"I know how meaningful it is for him to have an opportunity to be closer to his family,” Rice basketball coach Ben Braun said in the statement. “He has had a great relationship with his fellow students, teammates, and our staff and we all want to be there for him.”
The second-leading scorer on the team, Debose started all 31 games for Rice, averaging 10.4 points and 4.3 rebounds per game.
With DeBose’s departure, guard Max Guercy is the team’s leading returning scorer at 9.5 points per game.
