True freshman Josh Vidales was named Conference USA Hitter of the Week after helping to lead the Houston Cougars to a series win over Northeastern on their opening weekend.
“We are very proud of Josh,” head coach Todd Whitting said. “This is a great accomplishment for a true freshman competing in his first weekend of competition at the Division I level.”
The LaPorte, Texas native led the Houston offense with a .500 (6-for-12) average from the leadoff spot, including a 4-for-5 effort in his first collegiate game Friday night.
Vidales also played stellar defense at second base, committing no errors with five putouts and 12 assists. He currently leads the team with a .600 on base percentage and is second with a .583 slugging percentage.
After a game against Sam Houston State Tuesday night, UH will play a three-game set at Texas State this weekend.
