University of Houston safety Trevon Stewart has been named to the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) Freshman All-American team.
The true freshman’s 126 tackles led all freshmen nationally and was the second-best tackle total of all defensive backs nationally, and was 13th regardless of class.
After taking over as the starting free safety in the third game of the season, Stewart ended the year with 10 consecutive starts. His 126 stops were second on the team and fourth in Conference USA.
Stewart had six games with at least 10 tackles including a career-best 21 at East Carolina. He notched his first interception if the final game of the season against Tulane. He also had seven pass breakups, 3.5 tackles for loss for 13 yards including a 10-yard sack against UTEP.
Stewart was only one of two Conference USA players on the team. Marshall punter Tyler Williams was the other.
