Katy High School won its seventh state championship in 2012, going a perfect 16-0 in the process. Friday, American Football Monthly named head coach Gary Joseph its national coach of the year.

Joseph, who has been the head coach at Katy since 2004, has won three state titles with the Tigers and reached the championship game two other times.  And while he's had two other state championship teams, this year's squad may have been the best at Katy.

Katy won every game by at least 11 points, and won 10 of its games by at least 40 points. In the playoffs, the Tigers outscored their opponents 331-106. During the regular season Katy held seven of its 10 opponents to 10 points or less.

At the end of the season, the Tigers finished in the top three of most publications' mythical national champion polls, the National Sports News Service ranked Katy No. 1.
