22-4A Marshall thought it was headed towards state in football this year before falling in the Region III final, now it looks like the basketball team is arching towards that same goal. The Buffaloes are the top ranked team in 4A in the latest poll, and beat second place Willowridge by 20 in the first meeting between the two teams on Saturday. Willowridge, for its part, has handled every other team in 22-4A and seems well on its way to claiming second place in district. Despite its place behind Marshall, Willowridge should be justifiably bullish on its playoff prospects. Marshall is the only 4A team to beat them and the Eagles own wins over teams like Pearland and Cy Creek. Ridge Point, Tomball Memorial, Tomball and Stratford will be battling for the final two playoff spots.
23-4A Terry has the most heralded player in district 23-4A, but at the halfway point it’s Brazosport that has the top spot in the standings. Exporter’s senior Jaleen Smith has matched Terry’s Derrick Griffin by averaging over 21 points per game, and Brazosport also has another 21 points per game scorer in Khory Ross. Brazosport has yet to lost to a 4A school and has beaten 5A district leaders like Elsik and Clear Brook already. Angleton and Lamar Consolidated hold the inside track to the final two playoff spots in the district, though George Ranch and Richmond Foster are still within shouting distance.
24-4A This is the most jumbled picture at the top of any district in the area. At the midway point there are three schools still vying for first place with Pearland Dawson, Texas City and Friendswood all with just one loss in district. Friendswood is the only one ranked in the state polls at 24, but most of the losses for both Dawson and Texas City came while they had players still in the football playoffs. Dawson had five losses before Thanksgiving while the Stingarees had seven losses before the start of December.
