T.J. Yates was leapfrogged on Thursday morning when Gary Kubiak named third-string quarterback Case Keenum the starting quarterback on Sunday.

"You can imagine I wasn’t exactly happy about it but that’s Kub’s decision," Yates said at his locker after practice. "I’ll support Case and do whatever I can to help him out and to help this team get a win."

Yates has been the team's backup quarterback for two seasons and even led the Texans to their first franchise playoff win two years ago when Matt Schaub was out for the year with an injury.

When Schaub went down against the Rams, Yates came into the game but struggled, throwing two interceptions. On Wednesday he wasn't sure if he would have needed to compete had he played better against the Rams.

Keenum has never been active for an NFL game.

On Thursday, Yates said he was "a little bit" surprised that he wasn't named the starter for this week's game.

"Yeah, (Kubiak) told me he was just going on a gut feeling, trying to give the team a spark," Yates said.

Yates will continue to be the backup quarterback on Sunday. And with Schaub ruled out, will be the only other option at QB.

“It was good," Keenum said of his conversation with Yates after the announcement. "T.J. said, ‘Go out there and get ‘em.’ That’s kind of the basis of it.”
