Kubiak on Yates: 'He answered the bell'

The long summer battle is over. T.J. Yates is the Texans’ backup quarterback.

Yates battled with University of Houston product Case Keenum throughout OTAs and training camp. Keenum was the local favorite but Yates didn't do anything to lose his job.

“I couldn’t make a wrong decision,” Kubiak said.

Kubiak also said while Yates will start the season as the backup, the two will continue to battle throughout the season.

Yates and Keenum were both very good in preseason games. Yates has been the Texans’ backup for two seasons since being drafted out of North Carolina. He won the franchise’s first playoff game two years ago.

“Very hard. Very hard,” offensive coordinator Rick Dennison said. “Both played very, very well. Both are extremely hard workers.”
