JJ Watt assisted on three tackles and recorded a half-sack in Sunday’s season-ending loss in New England, but it’s what Watt did before the game that is drawing attention.
According to numerous reports, Watt spit – and then wiped his feet – on the midfield logo at Gillette Stadium in the build up to Houston’s 41-28 AFC Divisional round defeat to the Patriots.
Darren Haynes of WHDH-TV tweeted the following about an hour before kickoff:
#Texans J.J. Watt just ran onto the field and "SPAT" on the #Patriots logo! @7news

Moments later, Mike Petraglia of WEEI Radio seconded:
Yes, I can confirm that J.J. Watt just expectorated on the #Patriots logo at midfield.

After the game, Watt was asked about the spitting incident and if he was ‘trying to psych his team up’.
“I do that every game – home or away,” Watt explained to reporters. “I go out to midfield, jog out there, spit a little, wipe my feet off and then go through my stretches.”
Watt continued.
“No drama there,” assured the Texans’ defensive end. “That is 100% what I do every game – home or away.”
