Former Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy thought new NBA commissioner Adam Silver did exactly the right thing in banning Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling for life and working to force the sale of the franchise. But for Van Gundy, Silver’s action should be the first by professional sports leagues to right wrongs as far as racial issues are concerned.
Speaking with reporters at NRG Stadium where he was representing the charter school Pro Vision, Van Gundy said he wanted to see the NFL take the lead to resolve the issue surrounding the Washington Redskins nickname.
“Frankly I would like to see the next move be the NFL doing the right thing with the nickname of the Redskins,” Van Gundy said. “That’s what leadership does, it seizes a moment before everybody else thinks it’s a huge issue. And I think the NFL has to do the right thing and follow through with an issue that’s been lingering on.”
