With a shortage of pass-catching tight ends, the Texans have signed FB/TE Brad Smelley to the active roster.

To make room on the roster, the Texans releleased tight end Jake Byrne.

Garrett Graham (hamstring) hasn't practice this week and Owen Daniels (leg) still hasn't practiced with the team and is on the IR with designation to return. That left rookie Ryan Griffin and Byrne as the healthy tight ends.

When Griffin missed the Raiders game with a concussion, the team elected to use an offensive tackle instead of putting Byrne on the field. Smelley might be more of a threat to catch a pass than Byrne was. Don't be surprised to see him get some playing time in two-tight end sets.

Smelley was a seventh-round pick by the Browns in 2012 out of Alabama. As a senior at Alabama, he had 34 receptions for 356 yards and four touchdowns.
