The Texans announced Thursday that they have signed former Houston quarterback Case Keenum, former Texas A&M quarterback Stephen McGee and six other players to reserve/futures contracts.
McGee spent two seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, playing in three games and throwing three touchdowns prior to being cut just days before the 2012 season began. McGee finished 82 for 46 for 420 yards and never turned the ball over while with Dallas. McGee was a fourth-round pick in 2009.
Keenum spent last season with the Texans on their practice squad after signing as an undrafted free agent. Signing Keenum and McGee gives the Texans four quarterbacks under contract. They also have Pro Bowler Matt Schaub and backup T.J. Yates, who won the franchise's first playoff game in 2011. While those spots seemed locked up, there might be a position battle for the third-string quarterback come OTAs and training camp.
Six of the players, including Keenum, have only one year of NFL experience. Mike Mohamed, a linebacker out of California, has two years of pro experience. McGee is the eldest of the group with four years NFL experience under his belt.
Here's the full list of players:
Keith Browner, DE; Jake Byrne, TE; Delano Johnson, LB; Case Keenum, QB; Jeff Maehl, WR; Stephen McGee, QB; Mike Mohamed, LB; Nick Mondek, T.
