The Texans finally signed a free agent who wasn't on the team in 2013.

On Tuesday, they picked up 6-foot-2, 330-pound Jerrell Powe, who was a sixth-round pick of the Chiefs in 2011 out of Mississippi. Powe is the prototypical big nose tackle that has been associated with Crennel's two-gap 3-4 defense.

Powe, 27, was drafted by the Chiefs when Romeo Crennel was the Chiefs' head coach. Crennel is the Texans' new defensive coordinator under Bill O'Brien.

Powe played sparingly in Kansas City. He played in 12 games and started just one during three seasons; he registered eight tackles and one sack. The bulk of his experience came in 2012, when he played in nine games. In 2013, he played in just one game. He was cut before the season and didn't join the team until December in 2013.

He joins the Texans' depleted defensive line. Earl Mitchell, Antonio Smith and Terrell McClain all left through free agency, which left J.J. Watt, Jared Crick and Tim Jamison as the only linemen on the team with NFL experience.
