Texans' defense stepped up
"It's big, that's what we play the game for, to get into the dance and we got in today." - Andre Johnson.
For the second straight season the Texans are heading to the post season. With a 24-10 win over the Titans Sunday afternoon, Houston reached 11 wins for the first time in franchise history and will be heading to the playoffs. The Texans are tied for the best record in the NFL with the Atlanta Falcons at 11-1.
"I'm very proud of them to find a way to get into the playoffs," Gary Kubiak said. "I'm happy for everyone back home and I'm excited that we're going to be able to play some more."
Last season the Texans went to the playoffs for the first time in franchise history. It was a monumental achievement to reach the post season then, but now it's a different feeling around the team after clinching a spot Sunday.
"It's amazing how last year's atmosphere when we clinched against Cincinnati it was just euphoric," Kubiak said. "They're very happy, we're very happy I'll tell you that. I think they expected to get there and they got there today. There's a lot more to work on and accomplish before the season is over. We have to continue to push our group and have young guys play well for this football team."
"We came in with the attitude if we win we're in," Glover Quin said. "Anytime you can control your own destiny and you don't have to worry about if somebody else has to lose or anything like that, so we just wanted to come in and take care of business."
J.J. Watt became the first player in the history of the NFL to record 15 sacks and 15 batted passes in a season. As Watt continues his path to a defensive player of the year award he utters the same sentiment that his coach does about heading to the playoffs.
"It's great. I think the message you'll get from our guys, which is good, is we expected it," Watt said. "We're happy about it but we're not satisfied by it by any means. You have to be in the dance to win the whole thing, but we want more. We're looking for the division title, we're looking for the home field advantage, we're looking for the bye, all those things. And all we can do is keep winning games and this was the 11th one and now we'll go looking for number 12."
"To clinch a spot in the playoffs feels great," Quin said. "It's what you work for, to have a chance to get in and have a chance to win a championship. Eleven and one, never been done in this franchise's history, so it's big. It feels great, I'm going to be honest with you, it feels great."
Johnson was asked what it felt like to clinch a playoff spot in just Week 12.
"It's defenitely different," Johnson said. "We knew coming into this season that we had a great team and that we could do some great things as a team. That's why you don't see anybody going around here going crazy about it. We have bigger goals in mind but this is part of it and one of our goals, so we got this one accomplished."
