The Houston Texans have released running back Jonathan Grimes.

Grimes was signed while Ben Tate was dealing with a hamstring injury. He became the third running back behind Arian Foster and Justin Forsett. But Tate is healthy again, and the Texans don't need to carry four running backs.

Grimes spent his offseason with the Texans but was axed during the final cut-down. He was an obvious choice to bring in in late October because he already knew the offense.

The undrafted free agent out of William and Mary didn't touch the ball as a Texan. In a brief stint with the Jets this season, he had two carries and two receptions.

The Texans' 53-man active roster now has 52 players.
