As reporters walked into the Texans’ locker room around 4 p.m. on Monday, the names of Willie Jefferson, Cierre Wood and Sam Montgomery had already been removed from above their lockers.

The three rookies were officially waived on Monday after a rules violation in the team hotel in Kansas City.

"I don't understand why they did it,” linebacker Brooks Reed said. “They had the opportunity of their lives and they just kind of threw it away. I don’t have too much to say about it. It’s really unfortunate. We lost a lot of depth for that game. They were great players and they had a lot of potential. We just have to find more guys who are more dedicated to the cause.”

Reed also said the cuts were “for the betterment of the team.”

Veteran defensive end Antonio Smith worked with Montgomery quite a bit even before Montgomery switched positions from outside linebacker to defensive end.

“Yeah, it bothers you to see that,” Smith said. “It bothers you to see it, especially, I don’t want to single myself out, but me especially because I came in as an underdog and that’s a hard role and you really don’t know how blessed you are and how favored you are until you have something ripped away from you. It’ll humble you real quick. And they’re on their way to a humbling experience when they could have helped out themselves, their family members and their life for the future. And no telling how much good it could have did to take it in so little regard that you would something to put it in jeopardy.”

With those three waived and Brian Cushing’s impending trip to the IR, the Texans will have four roster spots to fill. Head coach Gary Kubiak talked about inside linebacker and special teams as places the team needed help.

“That’s very disappointing, man,” Brown said of the three cuts. “And I was at a point in my career, I was a really young player, I wasn’t as disciplined as I am now but you have to be unselfish. You have to put the team first in all aspects of what you do. And it’s very disappointing to have that happen. But best wishes to those guys. I hope they bounce back from it.”
