Texans heard Reed, say team will stay united

After the Texans’ 27-24 loss to the Cardinals on Sunday afternoon, the seventh straight, veteran safety Ed Reed said he thought the team was “outplayed and outcoached.”

The rest of the team heard him, including interim head coach Wade Phillips.

“Everybody has their own feelings about what’s happening,” Phillips said. “They have their own ideas about what’s happening or didn’t happen. We try to keep everything in house. That’s our policy here and that’s what we try to do and that’s what I’m going to do.”

Reed played just 12 snaps on Sunday and thought he could have helped more had he been given the chance. But Reed, 35, has been relegated to playing in the dime package, which wasn’t used often on Sunday. That’s wasn’t the plan when the Texans made him their big free agent acquisition this offseason.

Really, not much has gone the way of the plan, though. The Texans entered the season with Super Bowl aspirations, but with seven straight losses, the season is in complete disarray. And Reed’s comments gave a glimpse into a locker room that might end up dividing.

But the Texans say that won’t happen.

“We are very strong mentally; we have great leadership on this team,” left tackle Duane Brown said. “I’ve been here in years past where we had some bad seasons and it’s kind of gotten divided, a lot of finger pointing going on, but that’s not going to happen with this group. We are going to continue to battle, continue to stay unified and it won’t be a problem.”

Phillips also cited the leaders in the locker room as the reason the Texans won’t divide toward the end of their disappointing season.

Head coach Gary Kubiak visited the team on Monday and reiterated the message Phillips gave to the team on Sunday night about the importance of staying united as a team.

“It reflects what Wade said after the game,” punter Shane Lechler said. “If we splinter, you don’t know if you’re going to win another one. If we stick together, we have a chance to make it a respectable year.”

Veteran receiver Andre Johnson, and longtime friend of Reed, didn’t offer much of a response when asked about Reed’s postgame comments.

“That’s the way he felt. That’s about it,” Johnson said. “I can’t speak for Ed. It was something that he may have seen or the way he may have felt. He’s been around this game for a long time and he’s seen a lot. I guess it was something that he saw during the game.”

Johnson did, however, echo the sentiment from Phillips and Brown. He doesn’t think this Texans team will fracture with seven games left to play.

“I don’t think our locker room will get divided,” he said. “Guys on the team are real close and guys stick together. If our locker room gets divided, it’ll be something I’m very surprised to see.”
