We're still a little over a week from training camp but Matt Schaub's name has been thrown around a bit during the last week.

First, ESPN's Ron Jaworski listed Schaub as the ninth-best quarterback in the NFL. Then, the Texans' QB coach said Schaub can be a "crunch time player."

And Texans GM Rick Smith was asked about Schaub during his appearance on NFL AM on Wednesday morning.

"Quarterbacks are judged by championships," Smith said. "That’s just a function of the position. That’s just the reality. And he understands that. He knows that. And he does have to play better in those situations for us to take our team to the next level."

Schaub started off his 2012 season playing very well and was even named to his second Pro Bowl. But he didn't seem like the same player in the final games of the regular season and into the playoffs.

While Smith admitted that Schaub needed to be better in certain situations, he also said that Schaub doesn't get the respect he deserves.

"I don't think so. I just don't," Smith said. "Those numbers are very, very impressive and you don't see that very often. Matt's a tremendous leader. He's in the locker room and trainer room first and he's out last. Our team knows that he's our leader.

"And I don't know that he worries about that. I don't think that he does. I think that he knows his teammates respect him. I think that he knows his teammates have confidence in him and that's what's important."
