Schaub working tirelessly to rehab leg

The Texans were down 25 points when Matt Schaub was forced out of Sunday’s game against the Rams.

After being looked at by trainers, Schaub was on the sideline pacing and trying to test out his ankle and right leg. Ultimately, the team decided hold its injured starting quarterback.

But Schaub wanted back in.

“There’s no question, I was fighting to get back in, even down 25,” he said on Wednesday. “There was no question. I was trying to get back in. I want to be out there with my guys, out there with my team.”

Now Schaub’s status for this week’s must-win against the Chiefs in Kansas City is up in the air. If he can’t start, either T.J. Yates will take his place or third-stringer Case Keenum will make his first NFL start.

But Schaub still wants back in.

“There’s a few days left this week and I’m just trying to do my best to get to the point where I can go out there, function and do my job,” he said.

Schaub has been getting to Reliant Stadium at 4:30 a.m. each day since the injury to rehab with head trainer Geoff Kaplan. He said he hopes to practice this week at some point. He wasn’t able to on Wednesday; instead, he watched and tried to help the other quarterbacks.

“If you guys could see the work he’s putting in right now,” center Chris Myers said. “He’s just one of the fiercest competitors. I said it after the game and he’s just always been that way. He’d go out there with a huge brace on, which he’s done in the past before. He’d go out there and be able to play no matter what. That speaks for his character as well.”

Schaub was told Myers said he’d go out there with a big brace.

“If there’s any way I can go out there and play, I would do it, for sure,” he said. “I’ve done it before.”

Schaub’s injured leg is the same one he needed season-ending Lisfranc surgery two years ago. This time, the injury isn’t as significant. There are no broken bones but he did admit there was some ligament damage. He’s had injections and said it feels much better than it did the day of and Monday.

Coming into last Sunday’s game, Schaub was already in danger of losing his starting job. He had thrown nine interceptions in five games and four of them were returned for touchdowns.

Head coach Gary Kubiak isn’t in any rush to decide who will start the next game. And he won’t have to make that decision until just before game time on Sunday. It’ll also be Kubiak who will make the decision if Schaub is healthy enough to play. Even though Schaub said the two will have conversations about it and his input will be heard.

“It’s very hard. It’s very hard,” Schaub said about being honest about his injury. “Because I want to be out there every snap, regardless of any type of injury, whatever happens. It’s the nature of the game. It’s stuff you have to deal with and understand it’s a long year. Especially in our situation you want to be out there. Each and every game is dire for us right now.”
