Schaub not happy, understands benching

When the Texans take the field on Sunday night against the Colts in a game the team needs to save its circling-the-drain season, Matt Schaub will be a spectator. He’ll be a coach. He’ll be a mentor.

But he won’t be the starting quarterback. That job has been taken – at least for now – by Case Keenum.

“I’m a part of the reason we’re in this situation as a football team,” Schaub said on Monday. “It’s (head coach Gary Kubiak’s) decision. He’s the head coach but obviously, as a player and a competitor, I don’t like it. And I want to be out there.”

Schaub said his health is fine and so did Kubiak, who added that the decision to start Keenum was performance-based. But had Schaub not been injured, it’s possible Keenum wouldn’t have gotten the chance to make a start in Kansas City and impress the coaches.

Schaub was asked if he thought he lost his job because of the injury.

“Obviously, I haven’t played up to my standards this year,” he answered, “so I think that’s mostly where it stems from.”

And Schaub had been struggling this season, his seventh with the Texans and Kubiak. He’s thrown nine interceptions (four returned for scores) and just eight touchdowns. Through five games, Schaub’s turnovers led to 52 points from the opposition. He became the most criticized man in the city as the Texans began to pile up losses.

Kubiak told Keenum and Schaub the news of who would start last Tuesday and informed the rest of the team on Monday morning before practice.

“Obviously disappointed, which I wouldn’t expect anything else,” Kubiak said of Schaub’s reaction to the news. “We talked for a long time but he’s a competitor, he wants to be the guy in there. I understand that. I know it’s very difficult on him. It’s very difficult on me too to be honest with you. Buy you have to make decisions that are best for the football team right now. We talked through it, we move forward. His attitude is good, he’s back to work, trying to get himself ready to play.”

It’s possible Schaub has started his last game as a Texan but Kubiak wouldn’t commit to naming a quarterback past Sunday, so the two-time Pro Bowler could still earn his job back.

“We’re just taking them one at a time so we’re focused on what we have to do to beat Indianapolis this week,” Schaub said, “and that’s all that we can worry about individually and as a team.”
