Texans rookie nose tackle Louis Nix III was back at practice on Tuesday morning after being taken off the Active/PUP list.

Nix, 23, had arthroscopic knee surgery before training camp and hasn't practiced since the spring.

“It’s really trying to ease him back into things because he’s been out for a while,” head coach Bill O’Brien said. “And so it’s a matter of getting him back to football shape, getting him some work in pads and not throwing him right back in there for 50 reps at a practice. We’ll just continue to work him back it."

Nix did not speak to media on Tuesday.

O’Brien said he thinks Nix will “be able to do some things against Atlanta” but said they would see how he feels after practice. The Falcons join the Texans at practice on Wednesday and Thursday.

The Texans traded up in the draft to take Nix, out of Notre Dame, in the third round of the draft this spring.

Because he has been added to the active roster and is back at practice, the team can no longer place him on the regular season PUP.

Free agent pickup Jerrell Powe started the first preseason game at nose tackle last Saturday.
