Texans clean out their lockers

Wade Phillips didn't get the head coaching job with the Texans. But he'd still like to be in Houston next season.

While speaking with the Houston Chronicle's Dale Robertson said he hasn't had any contact with new head coach Bill O'Brien yet but was told by GM Rick Smith that all the assistant coaches will have a chance to meet and interview for jobs under O'Brien.

Phillips is hoping to be on that staff in his defensive coordinator role even though he isn't sure he'll be given that chance.

“I don’t know what their feeling is, not knowing the guy,” Phillips said. “Usually when somebody gets a job and you don’t know anything, you’re probably not involved. But I don’t know that for a fact.”

The process of building his coaching staff will be an important one for O'Brien, who is bringing his wide receivers and assistant coach Stan Hixon with him from Penn State.

“I think they felt (O’Brien) was best for their football team and I can deal with that,” he said. “I trust (the Texans’) ownership and they made the decision they made. They felt they did what’s best for their football team and I can deal with that. I told them I appreciated them letting me know.”
