Romeo Crennel interviewed with the Texans for their vacant defensive coordinator position.

The 66-year-old former head coach is coming to Houston.

According to ESPN's Chris Mortensen, Crennel plans accept the defensive coordinator position after he coaches the East-West Shrine game on Jan. 18.

Mortensen writes that Wednesday's interview was the first meeting between new head coach Bill O'Brien and Crennel. Both men worked for the Patriots but at different times.

The Texans have also hired Mike Vrabel to be the linebackers coach. The former NFL linebacker played under Crennel in New England and in Kansas City. He was Ohio State's defensive line coach. Vrabel will be able to help transition the defense to Crennel's 3-4.

Crennel, in the past, has run a two-gap 3-4, which is different than the system former defensive coordinator Wade Phillips ran.
