Before Wade Phillips addressed the team’s injuries, which is normally how he starts his press conferences, the Texans’ interim coach took some time on Thursday to praise his team’s energy and focus.

“We had a good practice today,” he said. “I really felt like there was a lot of focus, a lot of energy today. It’s one of our best practices, certainly since I’ve taken over. The guys were really into it and I appreciate that from them.

“Attitude and effort are the two big things that I concentrated on and I think their attitude was really good and we had a lot of effort in practice. Those are the things we’re working on. I tell them all the time: the will to prepare is just as important as the will to win. And especially in this situation, you have to have a will to prepare when your record is where it is now. I really think they did.”

Phillips said the energy in Thursday’s practice was comparable to their practices from early in the season. He also said the practice was clean in terms of penalties, something that has plagued the Texans recently.

The Texans are 2-12 as they head into their matchup against Peyton Manning and the Broncos at Reliant Stadium on Sunday.
