Wade Phillips has been head coach for five Hall of Fame players. He’s claiming Andre Johnson as the sixth.

“I know it’s an interim coach but to say I’ve been the head coach of Andre Johnson is pretty neat,” Phillips said unprompted on Friday. “I think I’ve got five guys in the Hall of Fame, that I was the head coach when I was there and about 18 guys that I’ve been around the team. I’m looking forward to him tying that record and going forward. And I’m gonna claim him no matter what. I don’t know if he’ll claim me as a head coach but I’m gonna claim him when he goes in the Hall of Fame.”

Phillips is the Texans' interim coach for the rest of the 2013 season and the 66-year-old hopes to be a head coach again. He holds and 82-62 career record.

Johnson is one catch away from being the second player in NFL history to record five seasons with 100 catches. He’s one catch and 205 yards away from being the first player in NFL history with four seasons with 100 catches and 1,500 yards.

Phillips said the Hall of Fame players he’s coached as a head coach are John Elway, Shannon Sharpe, Gary Zimmerman, Thurman Thomas and Ricky Jackson.

“Those are great players,” Johnson said. “Being mentioned with those guys is a tremendous honor. Hopefully I can just keep doing what I’m doing and maybe I can be in that same class one day.”
