LSU head coach Les Miles calls Alfred Blue “Cheese.”

Why?

“Big smile,” Miles said.

The Texans took the former LSU running back “Cheese” in the sixth round of the draft last Friday. Blue was the 181st overall pick, the pick the Texans got when they traded Matt Schaub to the Raiders.

“He was absolutely a steal and he will play special teams snaps start to finish,” Miles said on Wednesday while in Houston at a luncheon. “I think you guys will love him. He's a team player. He'll never be in trouble. He's going to buy into what the coaches say. I think it's a great hire, great draft.”

Blue started the first three games of the 2012 season before tearing his ACL. And he was really good too. In the first game that year, he ran for 123 yards against North Texans. In the second game, against Washington, he ran for 101 yards and a touchdown. And he ran for 46 yards on 10 carries and a touchdown against Idaho before getting hurt.

“Two years ago, when we started the season, he may well have been the finest back in our conference,” Miles said. “…And it took him some time to rebound off the injury but his speed is very good, his ball skills are great. He will run aggressively. We've had some great backs.

"I would not be surprised to see him contend for third downs, contend for first-down carries. I think having a fresh back. I know that you guys have Arian Foster. I know Arian's a very talented guy -- he's a Tennessee guy, isn't he? -- a very talented guy but I think he'd look forward to having some time to get fresher with an Alfred Blue carry here or there.”
