On Monday, as the Texans were back at Reliant Stadium to begin preparation for the Colts, owner Bob McNair addressed the team before practice.

He talked to the players about his decision to fire head coach Gary Kubiak on Friday.

"You know it’s always serious when he comes to speak," defensive lineman Antonio Smith said. "When Mr. McNair came to speak to us, when he came in the room, we kind of knew what was coming. We knew what was going to be said. Basically, he just treated us all like men and told us why he did what he did and the way he did it. That was it. He just gave us the respect of letting us know what was on his mind and why he did it."

The Texans started off the 2013 season with two wins but have lost the last 11. Kubiak was fired the day after the team's second loss to Jacksonville this season. Wade Phillips will take over for the remainder of the season.

During the press conference on Friday, McNair said he thought the team was talented and it wouldn't be a total rebuilding process.

Several players said they respected the way McNair talked to them before Monday's practice.

"We cared about Coach Kubiak and (McNair is) just trying to let us know that he just felt like it was right," nose tackle Earl Mitchell said. "And as a player, as a professional in this business, you just have to understand that you have to be aware that this happens. It’s obviously tough but it’s nothing personal. It happens in this business."
