Keenum: No awkwardness with Schaub

One would think it might be a little awkward in the Texans’ quarterback room. One quarterback has started two straight games and has taken over the job, while his predecessor (and long-time starter) has been relegated to backup duty.

But Case Keenum said that’s not the case with he and Matt Schaub.

“It’s been really good,” Keenum said. “Somebody else used the word awkward the other day and by all accounts from the outside, yeah, it should be awkward but it’s been the total opposite.

“I used the example the other day, you kind of find out the most about a person when things are going wrong and when they’re kind of being put through the grinder, especially off-the-field stuff that he’s had to deal with the last month, stuff nobody should have to deal with. And he couldn’t be a better guy.

“I’m extremely proud to know the guy and call him a friend. He’s still giving advice without me even asking and talking plays and talking ball, being there for me with whatever I need is huge. I couldn’t say enough about that guy. One of the best guys I’ve known. I’ve been really appreciative, really fortunate to have him in our quarterback room. I think we’ve got a really good quarterback room.”

Keenum said Schaub has helped him at practice, during the games and in the film room. Keenum said he’ll lean on Schaub even more with the absence of head coach Gary Kubiak, who is recovering from a mini-stroke.
