Former Texans secondary coach Vance Joseph has been hired by the Bengals.

Joseph, 41, will coach defensive backs for the Bengals.

Joseph just finished his third season as the Texans' defensive backs coach but was fired by new head coach Bill O'Brien. Joseph was well thought of by his players and is credited for turning around corner Kareem Jackson's career. Some thought Joseph would be one of the few coaches retained but he wasn't.

After Gary Kubiak was fired with three games left in 2013, Wade Phillips took over as head coach and turned the defense over to Joseph. Joseph called the defensive plays for the last three games of the season.

“Coach Vance has been a great help to me personally on and off the field,” cornerback Kareem Jackson said on Dec. 12. “He’s helped me progress my game tremendously, technique-wise, recognizing splits, formations, the whole nine. I’m excited about it. His role is expanding more. He’s going to be calling it. I know everybody in the secondary, we’re definitely excited about it. Hopefully, we’ll definitely go out and make some plays for him.”

Before joining the Texans, he spent six seasons with the 49ers. His last five seasons in San Francisco were as defensive backs coach.
