Phillips on the frustrating 2013 Texans season
The Texans were the worst team in the NFL in 2013 and earned the No. 1 overall draft pick.
After losing 13 straight, the Texans had their final chance to win a game in 2013 and instead lost 16-10 to the Titans in Tennessee. And for it, they’ll be rewarded with the first-overall draft pick in the spring.
The Texans finished the 2013 season with a 14-game losing streak after winning the first two games.
After taking a lead into halftime, the Titans scored twice in the second half to take the lead and the game from their AFC South foe.
The Texans got off to a great start under Matt Schaub. Schaub led the Texans down the field on their first drive and Jonathan Grimes punched it in the end zone to give the Texans a 7-0 lead.
A 55-yard field goal from Rob Bironas just before the end of the first half cut into the lead but the Texans took a 7-6 lead into the locker room. Both field goals came in the second quarter.
The turning point
Schaub threw a ball behind Ryan Griffin that bounced off Bernard Pollard and was intercepted by Akeem Ayers. The Titans scored a touchdown on the ensuing drive.
The Texans are minus-20 in turnover differential. That’s the worst in the NFL.
What it means
The Texans have earned the top draft pick in April. They guaranteed it with their 14th straight loss. They were the worst team in the NFL in 2013.
He was just signed off the street but Jonathan Grimes played pretty well, aside from a tough fumble. It’s impressive that he was able to be ready for NFL action after being on the street a few weeks ago.
Derek Newton continues to struggle. It’s inconceivable that he will be the starter at right tackle to start 2014.
J.J. Watt picked up a sack and has back-to-back double-digit sack seasons. His sack in the third quarter put him over 10. He hasn’t had the same statistical season that he had last year but he’s still really good.
Brice McCain had another bad game and has very likely played his last game as a Texan. He has really struggled all season long.
Did you know?
Andre Johnson has his fourth season with 100 catches and 1,400 yards, tying him with Marvin Harrison for the most all time.
Well, first, the Texans need to hire their new coach. According to reports, that guy appears to be Penn State head coach Bill O’Brien. If it’s not him, it might be Lovie Smith or Ken Whisenhunt. Then, they’ll have plenty of moves to make during free agency and then a big decision come April and the draft. It’ll be a busy offseason.
