Kubiak on Ed Reed and Wade Smith

Pro Bowl left guard Wade Smith had arthroscopic to clean out his knee on Tuesday morning.

Smith banged his knee last Tuesday and hasn’t been practicing since.

“Yeah, we made a decision to have Wade’s knee scoped today,” head coach Gary Kubiak said. “We took an aggressive approach to clean it up and he’s already done. Everything went good. Now we start the process of coming back. It’s going to be a day-to-day deal right now. He’s got some work to do to get back.”

Kubiak said there’s no timeline established but it will take about a week for the team to see “where we’re at.”

Smith took to Twitter on Tuesday afternoon: "My surgery went well. I appreciate everyone's calls, texts, thoughts, prayers, & well wishes 4 a speedy recovery. Be back before you know it"

Ben Jones, who was the starting right guard last year, has been filling in at left guard since Smith has been out. Jones started last week’s game at left guard and will start there on Saturday. Rookie David Quessenberry will also work at left guard.

Reed goes to specialist
Ed Reed, who is on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list, was not at practice working on a side field on Tuesday.

Instead, Reed is out of town, working with a private trainer he has worked with before.

Reed will work with this specialist for a couple days each week. The specialist has been in contact with Texans head trainer Geoff Kaplan and has been working in conjunction with the team. When asked, Kubiak stressed that Reed's meeting with a specialist did not indicate a setback.

Reed had hip surgery on April 30 for a torn labrum. He isn't allowed to practice with the team until he's removed from the PUP list. It's still unknown if he'll be ready for the season opener on Sept. 9.

Mays expects Cushing to play Saturday
Brian Cushing missed the Texans’ first preseason game on Friday on the turf in Minnesota but it looks like he’ll be back for Saturday’s home game against the Dolphins.

At least his fellow inside linebacker Joe Mays thinks so.

“Yeah, yeah,” Mays said. “I haven’t heard anything that says he’s not going to play and I’m pretty sure he’s itching to get back out there so, I’m expecting him to play.”

Cushing missed Sunday and Monday morning with an illness. He was back on the field for walkthrough on Monday afternoon and practiced on Tuesday morning.

"All signs are pointing toward him being able to get some reps, but we'll see," Kubiak said.

Other injuries
Rookie defensive lineman Chris Jones strained his calf on Tuesday morning. Jones has been playing nose tackle and defensive end.

Alan Bonner (hamstring), Whitney Mercilus (hamstring) and Brennan Williams (knee) were all still not practicing on Tuesday morning.

Brandon Harris (hip) was back on the field after missing some time.

Rookie fourth-round pick Trevardo Williams had a cyst on the bottom of his foot drained and had the day off. He should be back on Wednesday.

Menkin watch
The newest Texan, Nate Menkin was taking a physical as Kubiak spoke to the media after the afternoon practice. He's set to be in meetings on Thursday night and on the field Wednesday morning.
