Connor Barwin had 11.5 sacks, 27 quarterback hits and seven passes defended last season. And it looked like he was in line to make some serious money.

But a deal wasn't able to be worked out between the Texans and Barwin's camp, so the linebacker entered this season on the final year of his deal.

So far this season, Barwin's production is down and it appears that big payday might not happen -- at least not the way he envisioned.

“Yeah, I still feel good about the way I’ve played generally," Barwin said on Thursday. "I still feel good that I’ll be back next year and we’ll get the whole contract thing worked out. But obviously I didn’t sign the contract before the season and I obviously didn’t think I’d have three sacks going into week 15. Looking back on it, things might have been done differently, but I’m still fine.”

The Texans don't negotiate contracts during the season, so we'll have to wait until after their playoff run ends to figure out if Barwin stays.

While his production is down, head coach Gary Kubiak made the case that Barwin is more important than his statistics. Perhaps the most important this he does is play both the WILL and the SAM linebacker positions, which has helped him earn playing time in Houston.

But those excuses, no matter how relevant, weren't good enough for Barwin when he spoke last week.

“Well, I appreciate it obviously, but it’s like I said before," he said. "I’m not happy with having the stats that I have this year. I’d like to have more production. But it’s better than him saying he’s not happy as well. I appreciate him saying that and keeping some of you guys off of my back, but I’m still not happy with how I’ve produced this year.”
