Cushing: 'I want to come back and be a better player'
Even with a trip to be cleared for football activity by Dr. James Andrews scheduled, Brian Cushing knows he won’t be full go come training camp.
Cushing was injured on Oct. 8 against the Jets on a cut block from Matt Slauson. Cushing's season was over and he needed surgery.
Cushing is now on the mend and worked out with a side group during OTAs and minicamp. He didn't participate with the team at any practice because he wasn’t cleared by Andrews. That will soon change.
Cushing plans to fly to Florida to be cleared by Dr. Andrews on July 17 and the date was picked solely because of scheduling and not because of where he is in his rehab.
“I’ve done pretty much all my testing already,” Cushing said. “It was really just kind of a random date works for the both of us. Everything that I’ve need to do to get back to, I guess return to football kind of things, I’ve already done. It’s really just a date that I’ll get the official clearance from him.
Obviously, Cushing plans to be cleared on July 17 and be ready to go for training camp slated for the end of July. Even if he’s at camp though, Cushing feels that it will be a process.
“I don’t think it’ll be full go right away,” Cushing said. “But I think if anything, I don’t want to say a grace period, but we’ll definitely ease into things and take it slow and gradually build my workload up each and everyday.”
Cushing was asked which has been harder to get over, the physical aspect of recovering from his injury or the mental aspect of missing so much time and the Texans’ second trip to the playoffs.
“Pretty much all of it,” Cushing said. “Just for the fact that I haven’t been able to contribute and then on top of it everyone was out of the stadium and I was still there working day in and day out. Just hoping to get back and now I am. That time is now behind me and I’ve learned from it.”
“I just want to come back and be a better player,” Cushing said. “I know if I come back a better player, we’ll go farther in the playoffs. It’s as simple as that.”
