Early in training camp Jadeveon Clowney wasn’t sure he’d be ready to go when the Texans put on full pads at practice.

But on Monday, Clowney was ready and in the four practices since, the No. 1 overall pick has started to really show off the athleticism that made him the most highly-regarded player in the draft class.

“Well, you can tell that he has talent but he hasn’t been out here that much and he’s recovering from that little minor surgery he had and so we’re still working with him through that,” defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel said, “but he’s beginning to be in on more plays and do more things and I think that as soon as we can get him out there more, he will improve more.”

Clowney said he doesn’t feel physically limited in any way after his sports hernia surgery in June and has become much more comfortable playing in Crennel’s defense.

“Yeah, I’m learning the defense a lot better than I was,” he said. “Just come out every day and I’m working.”

Clowney has been learning from one of the best tackles in football this summer. Left tackle Duane Brown has been helping Clowney to learn which moves to use on which guys and how to attack offensive linemen. Clowney asks him every day how his pass rush was.

“That’s good work for me. Pro Bowler,” Clowney said. “A guy who comes out here and works hard every day. It’s good competition for me going against him every day. Just getting better every day.”

“He's a special talent, man,” Brown said. “And like I say, he's one of those guys who's really hungry and really wants to work hard and we got some good work in today. We're battling and I'm trying to make him the best I can and he's working to help me get better too. It's great competition over there.”

It’s not just Brown who has noticed Clowney’s unique athleticism.
“Yeah, he’s just another one of those highly-touted draft picks,” guard Alex Kupper said of Clowney. “Obviously, he’s the No. 1 pick. He’s working hard as well, trying to come back from that rehab. But yeah, he’s a helluva player and he’s trying to mold himself into this brand of football.”
