Whitney Mercilus strained his hamstring during the early portion of 11-on-11 drills Monday morning. He left the field but returned with his right thigh wrapped with ice.

“Whitney’s got a little hamstring strain we don’t think it’s very serious so we have to evaluate him,” head coach Gary Kubiak said.

Mercilus, a starting OLB, joins the growing number of injured linebackers.

Darryl Sharpton, who was expected to be a starting inside linebacker coming into training camp, has yet to practice. He is on the Non-football injury list after he reported to camp with a groin injury with some swelling.

Sharpton said he injured his groin while training but expects to be back in two or three days.

“Yeah, we actually gave Darryl and injection yesterday,” Kubiak said on Monday morning. “He’s feeling much better. I’m thinking around Wednesday we have to make a decision on the pads for him right now. Obviously it’s a setback. It’s a disappointment for Darryl and for us. We have to give him every chance to get back on the field. He had a great offseason. It was excellent.”

Sharpton looked very good during OTAs and seemed to have a starting position sealed up. After starting last season on the PUP with a quad injury, he returned before ending the season on IR with a hip injury. But Sharpton was healthy during OTAs and stood out.

He can’t practice until he’s removed from the Non-football Injury list. He can be removed any time during camp.

“We just started from Day 1,” Kubiak said. “We couldn’t just throw him out here. We had to start that process over again.”

Kubiak also mentioned that DE Delano Johnson suffered a groin strain in practice.

Meanwhile, Garrett Graham made his first appearance on the field this camp but still isn’t practicing. The backup tight end is still on the Non-football Illness list after suffering from a virus that put him in the hospital last Thursday.

“He’s fine. It’s just a process when you go through something like that,” Kubiak said. “He’s back with the team. He rode the bike a little bit today. He’s holding his food down. I’m hoping mid-week, end of the week, Garrett’s out here with the team.”

Wade Smith, who missed yesterday because he was sick, was back on the field Monday.

Safety Orhian Johnson was apparently taken off the Non-football Injury list. He was on the field practicing on Monday morning.

Several veterans – Owen Daniels, Antonio Smith, Johnathan Joseph and Andre Johnson – were given the day off to rest.
