Three and Out: Recapping Day 6 of camp
DeAndre Hopkins leaped above Johnathan Joseph in a 1-on-1 drill and pulled down an impressive catch in the corner of the end zone.
That play was just one of many rookie wideout DeAndre Hopkins made on Wednesday. Hopkins said it was his best day at training camp so far.
“Yeah, he had a really good practice,” head coach Gary Kubiak said. “I understand he had a great one-on-one. He’s getting better every day. Rolled his ankle a little bit, but kept going. That shows some toughness as a player. He’s made of the right stuff. It’s fun to watch his development right now.”
Hopkins was extremely impressive in the 1-on-1 drills, routinely beating Joseph, who has been a Pro Bowl cornerback for the past two seasons. Hopkins then put on a one-handed show catching passes from the Jugs machine and looked good in the team portion of practice.
“I don’t know. Probably,” Andre Johnson said when asked if Wednesday was Hopkins’ best day. “He made a lot of plays today. He makes plays every day. Rookies, they have so much coming at them, they kind of go up and down. The biggest thing I try to tell him is just try to come out and be consistent every day.
"That’s what you try to do as a player. Just try to come out and be consistent every day. He went out and made a lot of plays and you just have to try to continue to build off of it. I’m pretty sure he will. Like I said, he’s always willing to ask questions and wants to get better. He’s a great worker and he’ll keep it up.”
Third-round pick Brennan Williams, who has been dealing with a knee injury since spring practices, had it drained on Tuesday.
“His knee swelled up on him,” Kubiak said. “We drained his knee yesterday. It looks fine. We’re going to calm him down here for a day or two, so I don’t know if that means he comes back after we take our break this weekend or not. He’s up and at ‘em today, but we’ll have to settle it back down and see where we’re at.”
Jeff Maehl sat out practice with a hamstring injury and Lestar Jean’s hamstring was bothering him as well.
Whitney Mercilus (hamstring), Delano Johnson (groin), Sam Montgomery (ankle) all missed practice again on Wednesday. Garrett Graham was removed from the Non-football Illness list and returned to practice.
- No pads for the second open practice of training camp. They'll be back on Thursday.
- Rough day for all the quarterbacks. Matt Schaub looked the best out of the bunch but even he didn’t look good. Kubiak attributed the poor practice to tired arms. The team will get a day off on Saturday.
- Alan Bonner didn’t have a particularly good day but the rookie sixth-rounder looked good on inside patterns. He’s able to find some separation and make plays.
- Alec Lemon made another really nice catch on Wednesday. He’s in the mix to be a practice squad guy.
