Bo Porter is looking for someone to take charge at the top of the lineup.
Jose Altuve held that position for much of the season last year, but Porter would like to see the second baseman moved down one spot in the lineup.
“Just looking at the numbers I would love to have Altuve hitting second,” Porter told reporters this week. “But we’re going to need to have someone take the bull by the horns and grab hold of that leadoff spot.”
Porter’s dilemma at the moment is too many middle of the order hitters.
“You have Carlos Pena, Justin Maxwell, J.D. Martinez, Rick Ankiel, those guys are capable of hitting somewhere in the middle of the lineup,” Porter said. “You thrown Brett Wallace into that mix, Carter, you have guys that can hit in the middle of the lineup.”
The only positions that Porter didn’t mention when talking about the players was short stop, catcher and right field. If Marwin Gonzalez or Tyler Greene can show they can be a table setter, it might give them a leg up in the battle for playing time.
