Dawson was nearly an Astros coach

When Bo Porter took over as manager of the Astros manager after the 2012 season, he made an offer his friend, Hall of Fame outfielder Andre Dawson, was able to refuse. Barely.

“He said, ‘I’m going to tell you this once. When I get my managerial position I want you to be my hitting instructor,’” Dawson recalled at Thursday’s ‘Legacy Lasts Forever Dinner’ benefiting the Self Foundation. The foundation raises funds for after school activities for underprivileged children in HISD.

Dawson said he declined because of some person business and health issues. Working for Porter, however, nearly overcame those.

Porter confirmed the offer and hinted that he’s not done asking Porter to join his staff.

“I still get goosebumps when I think about it. You never know, ” Porter said. “It’s one of those things that, down the road… Our relationship is so close. He said ‘Bo, you’re the only person I’ve actually even given this much thought.’”

“I’ve always been overwhelmed by his character, his make-up,” Dawson said about Porter. “To be able to accomplish what he has at such a young age, I’m very proud of him.”

As for Porter’s ‘you never know’ comment, Dawson didn’t rule out the possibility of joining Porter’s staff one day as the hitting coach, though he said he thought current hitting coach John Mallee was doing a ‘great job.’
