When the Astros step up to the plate for the first time on Feb. 28, they will be sporting the latest technology to protect their heads. Every player will be required to wear the new Rawlings S100 Pro Comp batting helmet starting this year.

The change was mandated for everyone in the most recent collective bargaining agreement between the league and players, but some players wore it last year, including National League batting champion Buster Posey from San Francisco.

The helmet uses the latest technology in carbon fibers to make  a much lighter, but stronger helmet to provide the best protection. The technology used in the helmets is so advanced the helmet was recently named a finalist for an Edison Award for material science-composites.
