Getting to know Astros' 1B Brett Wallace
Astros infielder Brett Wallace was one of several position players who reported early to spring training this week, even though the official report date isn’t until Friday.
And even though position players' first official workout isn’t set until Saturday, the early birds have been taking flight, with informal batting practice sessions all week at the Astros' spring training complex in Kissimmee, Fla. Bo Porter said this week he wants a veteran designated hitter, with Carlos Pena likely filling the role. That means Wallace is expected to remain the Astros' first baseman instead of platooning at the position with Chris Carter, Nate Freiman and Pena as originally projected. Carter will likely be in left field, while Freiman could back up first base if he makes the team.
But before the position players officially report, find out more about Wallace off the field, including what is was like growing up in California’s famed wine country.
