Ely on his first start as an Astro this spring

John Ely's first start with the Astros didn't go so well.

But there's plenty of time to improve.

Ely started for the Astros against the Pirates on Sunday and gave up five runs (three earned) and three hits in 1 2/3 innings in the Astros' 8-6 Spring Training loss in Florida on Sunday. All of the five runs came in the second inning.

Ely was traded to the Astros for Rob Rasmussen in December.

The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Astros, while the Pirates ended a six-game losing streak.

Brett Wallace hit a three-run double in the third inning. After a five-run second inning from Pittsburgh, Wallace's double helped charge a four run third inning for the Astros. After exchanging runs in the fifth, the Pirates scored two in the sixth to put the game out of reach.

Jordan Lyles (0-2) officially took the loss after giving up three runs (two earned) in 2 1/3 innings.
