Astros outfielders Brandon Barnes and J.D. Martinez both left Tuesday’s game against Oakland early because of injuries.
“We will re-evaluate both guys,” said Astros manager Bo Porter, who said there was some bruising on the players.
Starting in center field Barnes was taken out with a mild calf strain and Martinez, who started in left field before moving to right field for the top of the seventh inning, was replaced after suffering a left lower back contusion. Neither player is expected to miss much playing time.
Barnes said he was stiff and that he didn’t expect to play Wednesday afternoon in the series finale against the A’s. Barnes was replaced in the lineup after the sixth inning by Marc Krauss. Krauss came in at left field, Martinez moved from left field to right field, and Justin Maxwell switched from right field to center.
Martinez had a collision with Maxwell in center field in the ninth inning chasing down a ball hit by Yoenis Cespedes that resulted in a double. A shaken Martinez was replaced by Jake Elmore, who took over in left field with Krauss moving to right field.
