According to Astros GM Jeff Luhnow, the Astros have already had discussions with Lance Berkman and his agent about a possible return to Houston.
"We have discussed it and we have touched base with Lance's agent and we've also talked to Lance," Luhnow said to Comcast SportsNet Houston's Marius Payton on Wednesday at the Winter Meetings in Nashville. "It's not something that's too far along now but I think sometime before Christmas or early next year is when we'd like to maybe get it to a conclusion. Because one way or another we're gonna need a DH on opening day."
Berkman hasn't played for the Astros since being traded to the Yankees during the 2010 season. He began his career in the majors in 1999 with the Astros and played 11 full seasons as an Astro.
For his career, Berkman is a .296 hitter and has 1,843 hits and 360 home runs.
Now 36, Berkman spent the last two seasons with the Cardinals in the National League. A move to the AL to be a designated hitter would make sense.
