The Astros have made a move to shore up the bullpen, signing righthander Chad Qualls.
This is Qualls' second tour of duty with the Astros. The pitcher was originally drafted by Houston in the second round of the 2000 draft. He pitched with the Astros from 2004-2007 and was a key member of the bullpen on the team that made the World Series in 2005. Qualls went 5-2 with a 2.61 ERA last season for Miami. He has also pitched for the Diamondbacks, Rays, Padres, Phillies, Yankees, and Pirates. In 663 career appearances, Qualls is 45-37 with 51 saves and a 3.79 ERA.
“Improving our bullpen is a top priority this offseason,” Astros GM Jeff Luhnow said in a press release. “Bringing Chad back to Houston is a big step in that direction.”
